Steel buildings designed to resist the elements

Protect your business from the weather with a steel building designed and installed by Steelwork Engineering

Thanks to storms Ciara and Dennis the weather has been big news over the last couple of weeks, with stories of flooding and high winds. Stormy weather can be incredibly damaging to buildings, resulting in significant costs and disruption which can be hugely stressful to cope with. Here at Steelwork Engineering we design, manufacture and build steel buildings which are designed to provide robust, versatile and weather resistant solutions for businesses of all sizes.

Why build with steel?

Steel offers the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any building material, making it the ideal choice for robust construction. However, just because a building is made of steel doesn’t mean that it’s able to cope with gale force winds. The quality of the steel is incredibly important as it determines the building’s ability withstand damaging weather conditions.

Here at Steelwork Engineering our buildings are manufactured to BS EN1993 standards and CE Marking is available on request, providing you with reassurance that your new building is strong, durable and able to cope with the worst that British weather can throw at it!

We have the expertise to design, manufacture and install steel buildings up to 250 tonnes which covers everything from small agricultural buildings and retail units, through to heavy industrial units and large scale retail complexes. We can provide you a structural steel building that’s designed to meet your exact requirements, helping you grow your business and plan for future expansion.

Steel earns its place in the circular economy

The concept of a circular economy is simple: resources are used for as long as possible to extract maximum value, before materials and products are recovered and regenerated to be used once again.

So where does steel construction fit in? Steel has unparalleled circular economy credentials and because it is has long been valued as a material which is strong, durable, versatile and recyclable, it is unique.

The concept of a circular economy promotes products with long lives. Rather than investing in cheap, disposable products, the circular economy maintains products at their highest value and utility for as long as is possible. This means that the longer a product lasts then the fewer raw materials will be required, leading to a reduction in waste. Not only are steel construction products intrinsically durable and will last a very long time, they can also be successfully reused once their first life is over.

Steel is recyclable, flexible and versatile

Recyclability is a key component of a circular economy and steel is 100% recyclable and is currently the most recycled industrial material on the planet. Steel can be recycled without loss of quality and although all new steel could be made from recycled steel, this isn’t possible due to insufficient supplies of scrap.

Another important component of a circular economy is a reduction in the amount of materials required. Steel is lightweight but very strong which means that significantly fewer materials are required to construct steel framed buildings. Flexibility and adaptability are also essential; because steel fabricated buildings can be constructed to provide flexibility through designs created to allow for easy rearrangement of internal layout, this further confirms steel’s place in the circular economy.

Structural Steel Design Awards showcase the versatility of steel

From a football stadium and Wimbledon No.1 tennis court, to a footbridge and a seal viewing hide, the recent Structural Steel Design Awards offered a fantastic insight into the versatility of steel construction.

The Project of the Year prize was won by Tottenham Hotspur Football Club’s New Stadium ; an incredible building constructed on a site which overlapped much of the land taken up the old White Hart Lane ground. Featuring a sliding pitch, steel was central to the structural design of the new stadium which as a 62,000 all-seater capacity.

London’s Coal Drops Yard also won an award; a shopping outlet which was recently opened in King’s Cross, Coal Drops Yard has a curved steel structure which spans the space between to restored Victorian buildings to provide an impressive roof structure. Greatham Creek Seal Hide in Middlesborough was recognised for providing a legacy structure for those who visit the popular destination for those wishing to photograph and view the area’s abundant seal and birdlife population. Lightweight yet highly durable and corrosion resistant, the Greatham Creek Seal hid strike fits the coastal landscape perfectly.

These are just a few examples of the steel construction projects awarded prizes in the 2019 Steel Design Awards. We think they showcase perfectly the versatility, flexibility and durability of steel. Putting steel buildings in the frame

Why build with steel?

The use of structural steel in construction is becoming increasingly commonplace and is now widely used in the building of industrial and commercial buildings. With this in mind, we thought it would be a good opportunity to discuss the numerous advantages which steel frame buildings can offer.

Quick, flexible construction

Perhaps the most significant benefit of steel frame fabrication is the fast construction time the process offers. Using fabricated steel in building means super-fast construction times, especially in projects where structural steel components are manufactured off-site and partly assembled, ready for use as soon as they arrive on site. Furthermore, unlike concrete buildings, steel frame buildings are ready for immediate use once they arrive on site because they don’t need time to set. Steel frame buildings also provide exceptional adaptability as they can be easily extended, modernised or updated, ensuring a future-proof, long-term investment.

A cost effective solution to building construction

By opting for a steel fabricated building design, rather than concrete, for example, construction time will be reduced and this will lead to a reduction in the overall cost of the project. Choosing steel over concrete can result in impressive time savings without having to compromise on the quality of the completed building. It is also possible to make savings when it comes to waste management as the amount of waste generated during steel building construction is limited as the building is constructed according to a set of detailed measurements. This means that the structural steel elements of the building are fabricated off site ready to be delivered, therefore reducing the costs which can be incurred by on-site storage.

Building foundations tends to be one of the biggest costs of most construction projects but by choosing a steel frame building, the foundations are significantly cheaper to build because the completed structure is lighter and will not put as much force onto the foundations. Therefore it is possible to use smaller and therefore cheaper foundations.

Durable buildings designed and built to last

Steel framed buildings are incredibly durable and weather resistant and will not shrink rust, or corrode. In addition, steel frame buildings manufactured by Steelwork Engineering are designed and built with the utmost precision, ensuring the highest standards of quality and a worthwhile investment.

Green steel

Sustainability is last but by no means least on our list. Whilst there’s no doubt that steel framed buildings offer a number of benefits, it’s also worth bearing in mind that using steel in a construction project can be a good way to increase your environmental credentials. Designed to last an incredibly long time, steel can also be re-cycled several times without compromising on quality.
