Why steel should be the main element of your next construction project

The advantages of using structural steelwork

At Steelwork Engineering we supply all types of structural steelwork designed for use in buildings of all shapes and sizes; from small retail units and farm buildings, through to factories and warehouses. Steel offers a range of advantages when used in construction and with this in mind, we thought we’d outline the four main benefits that using such a versatile building material can bring:

1. Cost efficiency: steel is cheaper than it once was and thanks to significant advances in productivity and the supply chain, savings can be passed onto customers in the form of competitively priced steel products.
2. Fast construction: speed equals efficiency and cost savings and because steel structures can be erected so quickly, other trades are able to start work on site much sooner. In comparison to concrete framed buildings the savings steel offers are obvious and this is one of the many reasons steel is now so popular with the construction industry.
3. Health and safety: health and safety is, of course, of paramount importance in any construction project. Thanks to the off-site fabrication of steel components, along with quick on-site assembly, both help to make steel a safe construction material.
4. Durability: steel is exceptionally durable and because it doesn’t decay or age as quickly as other building materials, it lasts significantly longer before refurbishment is required. In addition, steel framed buildings can be easily adapted and extended, helping to avoid the associated costs of extensive building work.

Steelwork Engineering Staircases

Take your business to the next level with a steel staircase installed by Steelwork Engineering

Installing a new staircase can help you maximise the space inside your business premises; helping you access currently unused areas. Whether installed as part of an extension project or in conjunction with mezzanine flooring, a steel staircase, rather than a traditional timber or concrete one, offers a robust and cost-effective solution. Steel staircases offer several advantages so we thought we’d run through some of the main benefits.

Fuss-free installation and lower costs

The fabrication process used to manufacture steel staircases is very flexible which means that they can be designed and built to fit buildings of any size or shape. Furthermore, once a steel staircase has been built, the installation process is quick and simple, leading to a reduction in costs.

When it comes to maintenance steel staircases offer a clear advantage over timber staircases in particular, as no painting, staining, varnishing or sealing is required. In addition, because they are resistant to fluctuations in temperature they won’t warp or twist. Lastly, steel staircases will never succumb to woodworm or rot and because the steel is pre-treated, there’s no danger of corrosion or rust.

Bespoke staircase designs tailored to meet to your requirements

Unfortunately there’s a misconception that a steel staircase will look very ‘industrial’ but this is not the case. As steel is incredibly versatile, steel staircases can be designed to look traditional, grand or stylishly simple. Whether you’re looking for a staircase to give your premises that wow factor, or are looking for a heavy duty, practical staircase, steel offers the ideal solution.

Steel fabrication plays an important part in our daily lives

Steel fabrication and design services from Steelwork Engineering

Although you might not realise it, metal fabrication is everywhere plays an essential role in how we live our day-to-day lives.

Without metal fabrication things would be very different indeed as it is used in everything from construction and farming, through to factory assembly lines, hospital equipment and computer network servers.

In fact, you could say that metal fabrication has shaped the world as we know it! The history of metal fabrication is a very long one, dating as far back as ancient societies such as the ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks. Historians have discovered that there’s a clear link between the success of a particular civilisation and the point at which they realised that metal ore could be forged and fabricated into weapons, tools or even simple machinery. As the centuries have passed and civilisations have developed, the use for metals has risen dramatically, leading directly to the seismic changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution which began in the 17th century.

From the car in your drive through to your office building, metal fabrications are everywhere. Although metal has been used in building and manufacturing for hundreds of years, the way it has made has changed beyond all recognition.

Steel – the eco friendly building material

Steel is now the primary building material for a huge range of construction projects; from houses, schools and offices, through to hospitals factories and warehouses. Steel has not only led the way as an efficient, low-cost construction material, it is also now widely recognised as a sustainable, eco-friendly building solution.
Steel manufacturing and construction industries have, for many years, been at the forefront of finding ways to improve and implement environmental practices. From incredibly recyclability through to off-site prefabrication and low carbon emissions, consideration for the planet is taken into account throughout the life cycle of steel.

Steel products from Steelwork Engineering

Although it takes huge amounts of energy and resources to produce steel, the steel industry has risen to the challenge of ensuring a more sustainable future. Thanks to new technology such as the electric arc furnace, which utilises recycled steel, the use of natural resources such as coal and iron ore has been reduced. However, where steel is really helping to come into its own is in sustainable construction:
• Because steel has an incredible strength-to-weight ratio, less building materials are needed to construct a structure designed to handle the same stress or load as other materials such as wood or concrete
• Steel lasts far longer than other construction materials as it does not warp, twist or burn and will resist pests and water. This durability is why steel buildings far longer than others.
• It’s the impressive recyclability of steel which puts it way ahead of other building materials, especially when you consider that over 650 million metric tons of steel are recycled each year.

Find out what is steel fabrication

Structural steelwork manufactured and installed by Steelwork Engineering

‘Steel fabrication’ is simply used to describe the process used to manufacture separate steel components. Once assembled and joined together, these separate components create a complete steel frame, designed to make the ‘skeleton’ of a factory building or office block, for example. Steel framed buildings are incredibly versatile because the frames can be manufactured from either standard sized steel sections, or if this isn’t appropriate, fabricated sections which are made to order.

The fabrication of steel sections has changed radically over recent decades. In the past we used tape measures to check measurements but these days we make the most of computer aided design and detailing. Computer aided design (CAD as it is widely known) is software which used to design each separate section. The CAD software we use is linked directly to the machinery on our factory floor which enables us to reduce manufacturing times whilst ensuring consistent accuracy and quality.
